  • Roundabouts have lower crash rates than conventional intersections, but they can see more bicycle crashes than four-legged intersections. Applying one or more of the following countermeasures will enhance bicyclist safety at roundabouts.
    • Do not continue a bike lane on the approaching roadway through the roundabout. End bike lanes at least 100 ft upstream of a roundabout’s entrance line and provide space for bicyclists to merge into traffic.
    • Use design features that encourage bicyclists to ride in the center of the circulating lane. Sharrows can be used to guide bicyclists and alert drivers that bicyclists may be present.
    • A bike lane taper should resume on roundabout exits downstream of crosswalks. Use a dotted line along the taper until the bike lane achieves full width. Use a solid line to separate the full-width bike lane from adjacent travel lanes.
    • If vehicle and/or bicycle volumes or vehicle travel speeds are high, provide a separate shared use path (buffered if possible) or designated bike facility outside the circulating road. When designing a shared use path, make sure that pedestrians with visual impairments will not confuse bicycle ramps with pedestrian ramps or crossings.

30.4 Increasing Driver Yield https://safedesign.uky.edu/project/1379/ Tue, 04 Jun 2024 16:35:13 +0000 https://safedesign.uky.edu/?post_type=project&p=1379
  • Many motorists overlook pedestrians as they enter roundabouts because they place their focus on evaluating gaps between upstream vehicles. Motorists exiting roundabouts accelerate, making it more difficult to stop for crossing pedestrians. Countermeasures are available to improve driver yielding (Table 30.2).
Table 30.2 Countermeasures to Improve Motorist Yielding at Roundabouts
Countermeasure Description
Increase Driver Awareness of Crossing Pedestrians at Roundabout Exits
  • Install pedestrian hybrid beacons (PHB) or rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB) on the exit legs of multilane roundabouts.
  • A secondary option is to locate a beacon and crosswalk more than 20 ft. from the start of the exit leg.
Improve the Visibility and Conspicuity of Pedestrian Crossings
  • Use high-visibility crossing treatments and signs to alert motorists to the potential for pedestrians at approaches and exits.
Increase Sight Distance to Pedestrian Crossings
  • Verify roundabout exists preserve good sight lines between motorists and pedestrians.
Lower Vehicle Speeds at Roundabout Exits
  • Incorporate design features that discourage high acceleration out of roundabouts. Lower speeds increase the time motorists have to see and yield to pedestrians.

30.2 Reducing Vehicle Speed Project https://safedesign.uky.edu/project/1373/ Tue, 04 Jun 2024 16:15:28 +0000 https://safedesign.uky.edu/?post_type=project&p=1373
  • Lowering the speed of vehicles approaching roundabouts improves yielding behavior, heightens motorist awareness of pedestrians and bicyclists, and mitigates crash severity. Designers can leverage several strategies to lower vehicle speeds on roundabout approaches (Table 30.1).
Table 30.1 Design Guidance to Lower Roundabout Approach Speeds
Design Element Strategy
Sight Distance
  • Provide only the minimum required sight distance. Along with lowering approach speeds, this minimizes speed differentials.
  • Excessive sight distance can increase vehicle speeds and compromise the safety of all users.
Lane Width
  • Narrowing the approach and exit lane widths reduces vehicle speeds.
Vehicle Path Radius at Entry and Exit
  • Reduce the vehicle path radius at the roundabout entry and exit. This reduces vehicle approach and exit speeds.
Inscribed Circle Diameter
  • Reduce the inscribed circle diameter to lower vehicle speeds. Verify the diameter is large enough to accommodate the design vehicle.
Transverse Rumble Strips
  • Installing transverse rumble strips on approaches can reduce speed but may increase speed differentials.
Guide Posts
  • Install guide posts (using even or uneven spacing) next to the vehicle path entering and within a roundabout.
Center Island Landscaping
  • Plant trees and vegetation to reduce both vehicle speeds and speed differentials.
