- Geometric, environmental, and traffic-related variables all influence driving speed under free-flow conditions on tangents. Drivers of free-flowing vehicles can select speeds based on their level of comfort and the appearance of the road. Researchers have identified several factors that are often associated with higher free-flow speeds:
- Higher design speeds
- Grade
- Wider lanes
- Higher access density
- Separated bicycle lanes
- Less pedestrian/bicycle side friction
- No roadside parking
- Number of lanes
- Shoulder width
