• Geometric, environmental, and traffic-related variables all influence driving speed under free-flow conditions on tangents. Drivers of free-flowing vehicles can select speeds based on their level of comfort and the appearance of the road. Researchers have identified several factors that are often associated with higher free-flow speeds:
    • Higher design speeds
    • Grade
    • Wider lanes
    • Higher access density
    • Separated bicycle lanes
    • Less pedestrian/bicycle side friction
    • No roadside parking
    • Number of lanes
    • Shoulder width
