- Roundabout markings must clearly communicate to motorists and other users information about a roundabout’s operation to ensure safe navigation. Yellow lines indicate opposing traffic and white lines signify traffic moving in the same direction. A solid white line is used to mark the road’s right edge.
- Provide stopping sight distance throughout a roundabout as well as at each entrance and exit. Vehicles approaching a roundabout must have stopping sight distance to the crosswalk and yield line, while motorists in circulating vehicles must be able to see the same distance around the circle. Vehicles exiting a roundabout need stopping sight distance to the crosswalk.
- If overhead lighting illuminates a roundabout, the luminance contrast between curb markings and pavement should be ≥ 2.0. If no overhead lighting is present, the luminance contrast should be ≥ 3.0.
