• Decisions about work zone speed limits need to account for road geometrics and the location of work zone features (e.g., lane closure tapers, work activity).
  • If possible, keep work zone speed limits within 10 mph of normal speed limits. Greater reductions have less credibility with drivers.
  • If opposing traffic flows are separated by a wide median, only reduce the speed limit on the side of the road impacted by the work zone.
  • Displaying radar-detected speeds on changeable message signs can prompt drivers to slow down. Work zone speed limits signs with flash beacons may help increase compliance with speed limits.
