- Gate rushing occurs when a motorist (a) drives under gate arms that are being lowered or (b) drives around lowered gates. Several countermeasures are available to discourage gate rushing:
- Install flexible centerline barriers upstream of the crossing
- Install a four-quadrant gate
- Adopt constant warning time train predictors
- Decrease warning times
- Install automated wayside horns
